On 22 November 2022, two research support officers from the University of Malta visited the Malta Centre at the University of Bremen, in Germany, to discuss the future of the centre and to participate in the Linguistics Week organised by the Department of Linguistics of the University of Bremen.
This visit took place in light of a new agreement between the University of Malta and the University of Bremen. The first agreement was signed in 2012, the year in which the Malta Centre was founded in Bremen. Through the new agreement, which was entered into in June 2022, a new local branch was set up in addition to the branch of the Malta Centre in Germany. Michela Vella, a student from the Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology, and Raffaello Bezzina, a student from the Department of Maltese, are the two research officers appointed as administrators of the new local branch.
Accompanied by the head of the Department of Maltese, Dr Michael Spagnol, the two research officers met Prof. Thomas Stolz, the Director of the Centre, and Maike Vorholt, the Administrator of the Centre in Bremen, and discussed a number of topics including:
1. collaboration initiatives between the two entities;
2. formation of a new website for the Centre that will include useful linguistic resources, such as a bibliography of Maltese linguistics;
3. the conference of the International Association of Maltese Linguistics (GĦILM) which will take place in September 2023 in Bremen.
